The aim of the present study is to identify, from secondary sources, by means of bibliographic survey, the importance of an adequate band of keratinized mucosa around osseointegrated implants. The bibliographic sources consulted were Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval Sistem online (Medline / Pubmed), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS) and Scientific Eletronic Library Online (Scielo) and, for the search, some keywords were used with combinations in Portuguese and English: “dental implant”, “peri-implantitis” and “keratinized mucosa or gingiva”. From the total of 46 articles found, the final sample of this study was composed of five scientific articles, selected through the inclusion criteria previously established. It is suggested that there is a relationship between the size of the keratinized mucosa strip and the health of peri-implant tissues. In view of this, we can conclude that, for the maintenance of peri-implant health, it is important that there is a band, considered adequate, of keratinized mucosa around osseointegrated implants.Os tecidos peri-implantares caracterizam-se pela ausência de inserção conjuntiva, ou seja, com a ausência de fibras colágenas sobre o implante, o tecido peri-implantar se torna mais vulnerável ao biofilme subgengival. O objetivo do presente estudo é identificar, a partir de fontes secundárias, por meio de levantamento bibliográfico, a importância de uma faixa adequada de mucosa ceratinizada ao redor de implantes osseointegrados. As fontes bibliográficas consultadas foram Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval Sistem online (Medline/Pubmed), Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS) e Scientific Eletronic Library Online (Scielo) e, para a busca, foram empregados alguns descritores com combinações nas línguas portuguesa e inglesa: “implante dentário”, “peri-implantite” e “mucosa ou gengiva queratinizada”. Do total de 46 artigos encontrados, a amostra final deste estudo foi composta por cinco artigos científicos, selecionados através dos critérios de inclusão estabelecidos previamente. Sugere-se que existe uma relação entre a dimensão da faixa de mucosa ceratinizada com a saúde dos tecidos periimplantares.
