The choice of theme is justified by its importance for the consolidation of a more just and democratic society, aligning itself to the fight against any form of prejudice and discrimination, as well as for the difference to people with Down syndrome and their families. This study aimed to understand the contributions of the Social Service to the process of autonomy and empowerment of the families of people with Down's Syndrome? It is considered that the work of the Social Service with families represents a commitment to changes that may emerge in context with these individuals, promoting a broader participatory process that aims to consolidate the social, political, economic and cultural rights of these individuals and their families.Neste artigo promove-se uma reflexão sobre a atuação do Serviço Social no processo de acompanhamento ás famílias de pessoas com Síndrome de Down, mediante um estudo de natureza exploratória e bibliográfica, buscando uma aproximação na realidade específica, considerando a experiência do estágio curricular em Serviço Social vivido junto à Associação Pestalozzi de Porto Velho/RO. A escolha do tema justifica-se por sua importância para consolidação de uma sociedade mais justa e democrática, alinhando-se ao combate de qualquer forma de preconceito e discriminação, bem como pela diferença às pessoas com Síndrome de Down e suas famílias. Por meio deste estudo buscou-se compreender quais as contribuições do Serviço Social para o processo de autonomia e empoderamento das famílias de pessoas com Síndrome de Down?
