In this year, that marks the 150th anniversary of the war operation called the "Retirada da Laguna", one of the most glorious pages of the Brazilian Military History, it is opportune to revisit the history of the 17th Fatherland Volunteer Corps. The present study has this purpose and deals with the various human and military aspects of this Volunteer Corps, from recruiting, through its formation and trajectory in the campaign, to its final destination in the post-war period. The study shows that the 17th Fatherland Volunteer Corps was mobilized throughout the war, participated in the Mato Grosso Campaign, and later became part of the forces commanded by Count d'Eu in Paraguay, but above all, it entered the Military History by the examples of discipline, bravery, obstinacy, resignation and overcoming in exceptional situations, during the "Retirada da Laguna".Durante a Guerra do Paraguai, o 17º Corpo de Voluntários da Pátria, da Província de Minas Gerais, integrou a Força Expedicionária que operou no sul de Mato Grosso, então invadida pelos paraguaios, e foi um dos protagonistas do episódio épico narrado por Alfredo d'Escragnolle Taunay em sua famosa obra literária "A Retirada da Laguna". Neste ano, que marca o 150º aniversário da operação de guerra denominada de a Retirada da Laguna, uma das páginas mais gloriosas da História Militar do Brasil, é oportuno revisitar a história do 17° Corpo de Voluntários da Pátria. O presente estudo tem esse propósito e trata dos vários aspectos humanos e militares deste Corpo de Voluntários, desde o recrutamento, passando por sua formação e trajetória na campanha, até o seu destino final no período pós-guerra.
