Para tal, antes da abordagem do fenômeno em si, foram definidos os fundamentos teóricos que regem sua inteligibilidade, utilizando-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa e exploratória. Isto é, para a compreensão do iliberalismo, foi preciso antecipadamente delinear um esboço sobre o seu antônimo: a doutrina liberal. Sendo avaliadas em seguida, as características constitucionais que garantem a vigência de um Estado de direito, além da intrincada concepção de democracia para as ciências sociais. Essas assimilações - aliadas ao devido pano de fundo histórico - fornecerão ao leitor a carga de conhecimento vital que antecede o desenvolvimento do tema. Aqui tratado pela perspectiva de autores renomados e dados de instituições idôneas, amplamente conhecidas pela comunidade internacional, a saber: a Freedom House e o Índice de Democracia do The Economist Intelligence Unit. To this end, before the approach of the phenomenon itself, it was defined the theoretical foundations which govern its intelligibility, using a qualitative and exploratory research. That is, to understand the illiberalism, it was needed before a sketch of its antonym: the liberal doctrine. Being evaluated, then, the constitutional characteristics that ensures the effectiveness of the Rule of the Law, besides the intricate conception of democracy for the social sciences. These assimilations - allied to a proper historical background - provide the reader the load of vital knowledge that precedes the development of the theme. Here treated by the prospect of renowned authors, and data from idoneous institutions, widely known by the international community, namely: Freedom House and Democracy Index of The Economist Intelligence Unit.
