It is subject to morphological and functional changes due to the interaction with the environment. Considering that the oral cavity is exposed to the colonization of several microorganisms, the components of orthodontic devices can lead to the accumulation of dental biofilm, which can cause adverse changes in periodontal tissues. Thus, the present study aims to conduct a literature review on a periodontal condition of patients using the fixed orthodontic appliance and removable aligner, through books and scientific articles, related to the subject in question, found in the following databases: MEDLINE, PubMed and SciELO. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that treatment with removable aligners is associated with lower levels of biofilm, gingival inflammation and probing depth, as they seem to facilitate oral hygiene procedures and the maintenance of periodontal health. The fixed orthodontic appliances, in turn, were related to a greater accumulation of biofilm and to a more pathogenic microbiota. It is evident, then, the importance of correct oral hygiene during both cases to prevent damage and maintain the periodontium, ensuring the success of orthodontic treatment and the patient's health.O periodonto é o conjunto de tecidos interligados pela gengiva, osso alveolar, cemento e ligamento periodontal, formando um complexo de desenvolvimento biológico e funcional. Está sujeito a alterações morfológicas e funcionais pela interação com o meio ambiente. Considerando que a cavidade bucal está exposta à colonização de vários microrganismos, os componentes dos dispositivos ortodônticos podem levar ao acúmulo de biofilme dental, podendo provocar alterações adversas nos tecidos periodontais. Assim, o presente estudo tem como objetivo realizar uma revisão da literatura sobre a condição periodontal de pacientes submetidos ao uso de aparelho ortodôntico fixo e alinhador removível, por meio de livros e artigos científicos, relacionados ao tema em questão, encontrados nas seguintes bases de dados: MEDLINE, PubMed e SciELO. Com base nos achados pode-se concluir que o tratamento com alinhadores removíveis está associado à menores níveis de biofilme, inflamação gengival e profundidade de sondagem, pois parecem facilitar os procedimentos de higiene oral e a manutenção da saúde periodontal. Os aparelhos ortodônticos fixos por sua vez, foram relacionados à um maior acúmulo de biofilme e à uma microbiota mais patogênica.
