Objective: To understand the daily life of families who experience the hospitalization of a newborn in the neonatal ICU at a reference maternity hospital in Florianópolis, in order to determine their socioeconomic profile and identify the feelings experienced by the family. Methodology: A case study was carried out at the Carmela Dutra Maternity Neonatal ICU in Florianópolis, Brazil, with a qualitative survey. Conduct semi-structured interviews with a sample consisted of 13 relatives of newborns hospitalized in ICU respecting the inclusion / exclusion criteria, availability, interest and anonymity. Data analysis was based on the method of Bardin providing two categories: Socioeconomic profile and Feelings living by families. Discussion: The ICU's environment involves and emerge conflicting feelings in the families that have their children, abruptly, under special care, demanding of these families a special effort to the care of the child in the ICU, the family, their tasks. The legal and social and culture context seems to stimulate the father's estrangement from care and attention to the child, at an important stage in the construction of the paternal and family bond. The sharing of the environment, integrates the health team and the family, building psychosocial manifestations, requiring the health professional technical skills and dynamism, an expanded vision, wisdom and patience in caring the patient and the family.Introdução: O nascimento de um filho que é hospitalizado em estado grave, ou em risco de morte, apresenta particularidades não vivenciadas rotineiramente, como rotina intensa, pressões familiares, angústia, levando a se adaptarem a uma realidade até então desconhecida. Objetivo: Compreender o cotidiano das famílias que vivenciam a hospitalização de um recém-nascido na UTI neonatal em uma maternidade de referência em Florianópolis, buscando determinar seu perfil socioeconômico e identificar os sentimentos vividos pela família. Metodologia: Foi realizado um estudo de caso, na UTI Neonatal da Maternidade Carmela Dutra, em Florianópolis, com abordagem qualitativa. Realizaram-se entrevistas semiestruturadas em uma amostra de 13 familiares de recém-nascidos internados na UTI, respeitando-se os critérios de inclusão/exclusão, disponibilidade, interesse e anonimato. A análise de dados baseou-se no método de Bardin originando duas categorias: Perfil socioeconômico e Sentimentos vividos pelas famílias. Considerações finais: O ambiente de uma UTI neonatal envolve e aflora uma série de sentimentos conflitantes nas famílias que tem seus filhos, abruptamente, sob cuidados especiais, exigindo destas famílias esforço especial em relação ao cuidado do filho na UTI, a família, seus afazeres. O contexto legal e sócio-cultural parece estimular o afastamento do pai no cuidado e atenção ao filho, numa fase importante para construção do vínculo paternal e familiar.
