Initially, reflections are done about the literary art, finding the context in the period of publishing of the works. The analysis of the “shades” and of the prejudice of the mullata performed by characters Isaura and Rita Baiana, tries to emphasize and to estimate the different approaches done by authors of the XIX century. This study – when it focus the characters Isaura and Rita Baiana – discusses the language used by the authors in their plots and dialogues, put in scene reflections and it uncovers the racial prejudice in Brazilian society in the second half of XIX century. These elements contribute to validate the literary art as an important presentation to analyse the time and the societies, among others.Esta dissertação propõe uma leitura dos romances A Escrava Isaura, de Bernardo Guimarães, e O Cortiço, de Aluísio Azevedo, tendo como eixo para reflexão uma investigação dos matizes e do preconceito da mulata nas referidas obras. Parte-se, inicialmente, de reflexões sobre a arte literária, localizando-as e contextualizando-as no período da edição das obras. A análise dos matizes e do preconceito da mulata representadas pelas personagens Isaura e Rita Baiana procura destacar e avaliar as diferentes abordagens dadas pelos autores do século XIX. Ao centrar-se nas personagens Isaura e Rita Baiana, este estudo quer trazer à discussão como a linguagem utilizada pelos autores, em seus enredos e diálogos, coloca em cena reflexões e desvelamentos do preconceito racial na sociedade brasileira da segunda metade do século XIX.
