Artigo Científico Acesso aberto Características do aleitamento materno em crianças de 0 a 24 meses atendidas no ambulatório materno infantil de uma universidade do sul de Santa Catarina(2019) Aguiar, Adriana Vicente; Willemann, Franciele DamasioIntroduction: Breast milk is the richest and most complete food for the healthy growth and development of children in the first 24 months of life. Besides having all the essential nutrients, it is also responsible for disease prevention. Objective: To know the breastfeeding characteristics in children from 0 to 24 months of age attended in the Maternal & Child Health Clinic of the University of the South of Santa Catarina from October to November 2018. Method: This is a cross-sectional study with quantitative approach. Data collection was carried out between October and November of 2018, in the Maternal & Child Health Clinic of the University of the South of Santa Catarina, through interviews guided by a questionnaire prepared by the authors. The information obtained was listed in relevant categories in the program Microsoft Excel Office 365 version 2010 and later organized and analyzed in SPSS software 20.0. Results: The study sample consisted of 82 mothers with children from 0 to 24 months, of whom: 64.6% were breastfed and 35.4% were not, 43.9% of these children were in the age group from 1 to 6 months of age, of which only 14.6% were exclusively breastfed. From the total of the sample, those who were not weaned or in AME, 15.9% were in breastfeeding and artificial milk, 23.2% in breastfeeding and complementary feeding and 11% in breastfeeding, artificial milk and complementary feeding. The food introduction occurred on average at 5.8 months. In 7.3% of the children, food was introduced early (before 6 months), and considering children over 6 months (56.1%), only 30,4% started the food introduction at 6 months as recommended. Among the main reasons for weaning, the most cited were: the child did not want it (17.1%), started another diet (12.2%), other causes (17%), the child cried a lot 8.5%, low milk (8.5%) and return to work (8.5%). There was no statistically association between level of schooling, maternal age and family income with the situation of breastfeeding. Conclusion: This study contributed to know the breastfeeding situation of the children attended at the Maternal & Child Health Clinic of the University of the South of Santa Catarina. There was a high pre-weaning rate and a low exclusive breastfeeding rate up to 6 months. Therefore, there is a need to focus efforts on the implementation of measures to promote and protect breastfeeding.
