Health professionals, especially nursing professionals, who have direct contact with patients, are more exposed to the occurrence of occupational accidents. Objective: to analyze the occurrence of occupational accidents and their motives with sharps and exposure to biological material among nursing professionals. Method: This was a descriptive study with a quantitative approach. The study was attended by 52 health professionals, 11 of the Our Lady of Grace Wing, 22 of the General ICU and 19 of the Coronary ICU. Results: Regarding gender, it was predominantly female, and the age range ranged from 18 to 53 years, with a higher frequency of 25 to 35 years. In the case of double journey and type of the second institution, a small portion gets second trip, the kind of instuition being deprived. According to the time of service, the predominant years were from 1 to 10 years, but with emphasis on the interval of 1 to 5 years. Among those interviewed, at ANSG, 64% reported having received training, General ICU and Coronary ICU had both 68%. Of the total number of accidents occurred per sector, 6 of the 15 employees in the ANSG were injured, in the General ICU 11 out of 22 and in the Coronary ICU were 15 out of 19. The Coronary ICU reported the highest underreporting rate in relation to accidents not registered in the SESMT. Comparing the three sectors, the nature of the accident that most stood out was with sharps. Regarding the occasional reason for the work accident, in the ANSG there was a tie of 40% each for Failure to comply with the security procedures and Inattention of the identification of the safety limit in the punch discard box. In the General ICU, non-compliance with safety procedures reached 37% of accidents. And in the Coronary ICU, 29% were for Lack of Attention as well as for the Non-compliance of the security processes and Inattention of the identification of the safety limit in the punch discard box. Conclusion: the research made it possible to verify the occurrence of work accidents with nursing professionals, due to several factors that led to this, due to the handling of sharps and exposure to biological material. Preventive measures should be adopted to reduce accidents, such as planning and implementing more efficient programs of orientation specific to nursing workers, so that they adopt a safe professional practice.
