Monografia Acesso aberto Desenvolvimento de fármacos de origem marinha para o tratamento de doenças tropicais negligenciadas(2023-06-05) SANTOS, Bruno; RIBEIRO, EdsonThe term “Neglected Tropical Diseases” (NTDs) describes a transition from studies carried out in the 19th century by the first schools of tropical medicine to the beginning of the new millennium, with actions carried out by the World Health Organization (WHO). – Currently, NTDs are diseases caused by viruses, bacteria and parasites, which affect individuals, tolerated below the poverty line. – In a study carried out on the global financing of innovation for neglected diseases (G-Finder2, its acronym in English) revealed that less than 5% of this financing was invested in the group of extremely neglected diseases, even though more than 798 million people are threatened and 260 thousand are killed in the world by these three parasitic diseases In this context, it is possible to research and develop new drugs that combat NTDs. A possible solution for the treatment of these diseases is the use of products from natural sources as an alternative in the treatment of these infections, providing even more effective compounds for the development of new drugs. – Marine species can be identified as an alternative source of active compounds due to their variety of secondary metabolites. – In view of this, the present work not only reaffirms the importance and effects of Neglected Tropical Diseases NTDs, but also emphasizes a promising origin for the development of new drugs. In addition, the work intends to present algae with promising pharmaceutical potential in the fight against two of the 2 main NTDs that afflict the Brazilian population, Chagas disease and schistosomiasis. Keywords: Neglected diseases. Algae with therapeutic potential. schistosomiasis. Chagas disease.
