Intestinal constipation affects about 20% of the world's population and it’s one of the most frequent symptoms of seeking medical help. It can be referred by the patient as hard stools, excessive effort in the act of evacuation, infrequent evacuations or feeling of incomplete evacuation. It is subdivided into primary and secondary, the latter having a well-defined cause, such as endocrine and neurological diseases or inadvertent use of constipating substances. The role of the nutritionist is to guide patients towards the need for a diet rich in fiber and adequate hydration. Pharmacological management may include fiber supplementation, osmotic laxatives, emollients, and irritating laxatives.
