dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this article is to analyze female representation through Cultural Theory in the series The Handmaid's Tale (2017). Based on a book of the same name by author Margaret Atwood, the series is set in a dystopian, totalitarian, and Christian-military fundamentalist society. In order to increase birth rates and resume what they call 'old ways', in this reality women lost their voice, were downgraded because of their gender and turned into reproduction machines. Through research on culture, society and the feminist movement, this paper analyzes how women in the fictional Gilead country are represented. They are exposed to the same conditions as equals and are willing to change and fight for the right of their own choices.en
dc.description.abstractO objetivo desse artigo é analisar a representação feminina por meio da Teoria Cultural na série The Handmaid’s Tale, em português O conto da Aia (2017). Baseado em um livro homônimo, da autora Margaret Atwood, a série é ambientada em uma sociedade distópica, totalitária e fundamentalista cristão-militar. Com o intuito de aumentar os índices de natalidade e retomar o que chamam de ‘velhos costumes’, nesta realidade as mulheres perderam a voz, foram rebaixadas devido ao seu gênero e transformadas em máquinas de reprodução. Com uma pesquisa sobre a cultura, sociedade e o movimento feminista, este trabalho analisa como as mulheres do país fictício Gilead são representadas. Elas são expostas às mesmas condições de igual para igual e mostraram-se dispostas a mudar e lutar pelo direito das próprias escolhas.pt_BR
