A nicotina
Smoking is identified as a chronic disease caused by submission to nicotine present in tobacco-based artifacts and kills more than 8 million human beings annually. On the other hand, it is pointed out as the largest isolated preventable cause of illness and early death worldwide. Because nicotine is a substance that activates brain areas responsible for feelings of pleasure and relaxation, the development of dependence is achieved through a reciprocal action between a mechanism of positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement. Two methods are used for smoking cessation, medication and non-medication. The objective of this work is to approach the performance of the professional pharmacist in smoking cessation. For this, a review of the literature was carried out through scientific documents available in databases: Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), PubMed and Google Scholar, between the years of 2012 and 2022. Drug treatment can be done through patches or nicotine gum, bupropion and nortriptyline. On the other hand, the non-drug group, through individual or group therapeutic counseling, through meetings with the aim of discussing the importance of quitting smoking and guidance on difficulties throughout the process. The pharmacist is a great ally in this process, he is located in a prioritized category to help smokers, since he has the opportunity to offer not only direction, but also recommend various pharmacological therapies, discuss all the particularities of the medicine in terms of adverse effects, dosage, instructions for use, dosages, among others.
