Osteonecrosis is a pathology characterized by the death of bone tissue due to lack of blood supply, which leads to a process of bone necrosis at the site. This condition can be caused mainly by the use of bisphosphonate medications, widely used in patients with osteodegenerative diseases. The objective of this article is to understand the process of maxillomandibular osteonecrosis associated with bisphosphonates after tooth extraction, aiming to understand its main causes, mechanism of action, diagnosis and treatment. To this end, an integrative review was carried out based on searches in electronic databases Portal Periódicos CAPES, PubMed and SciELO, where articles dated between 2003 and 2023 were selected. The dental surgeon needs to constantly be updated regarding the risks of subdiagnosis of Osteonecrosis Maxillomandibular. Direct communication with medicine, and a multidisciplinary approach, is also extremely important to establish preventive treatment. Although its percentage is relatively low, the occurrence of osteonecrosis associated with the use of bisphosphonates can be severe and cause various harm to the patient.
