Depression and anxiety, nowadays, are the mental illnesses that most affect the Brazilian population. The objective of this study was to analyze how much the pandemic brought a high increase in the number of cases of people with depression and, consequently, the largest number of patients using anxiolytics. This study is a literature review. The bibliographic material was selected in August 2022, covering publications between the years 2020 and 2022. The increase in psychic symptoms and mental disorders during the pandemic occurred due to several causes. Prolonged living together at home increased the risk of imbalances in family dynamics. Added to this are reductions in income and unemployment, which further worsen the strain on families, parents often seeing their children have nothing to eat, for example. And, yet, the deaths of loved ones in a short period of time, together with the difficulty in carrying out the wake and burial, and with that making the mourning experience difficult and preventing the adequate re-signification of the losses, increasing stress. In conclusion, the results obtained showed that the use of anxiolytics increased in different parts of Brazil, with females being the most affected. The studies were carried out with various groups of people including students and health professionals. Medicines like Diazepam and Clonazepam were the most prescribed by medical professionals.
