Epidemiological studies indicate that the most commonly used drugs in order of employment are alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, crack and cocaine. The effects of the abuse of alcohol and other drugs are major determinants of morbidity and mortality. Affecting both the central nervous system and the individual's perception of the environment, in addition to causing severe mood swings, sudden loss of vanity and hypochondria. As for oral health, xerostomia alterations, elevated CPO-D, reduced saliva buffering capacity, angular cheilitis, bruxism, tooth loss, periodontal disease, halitosis and stomatitis are the most frequent alterations. There is a need for greater employment of dentists in the development of public policies for the prevention and treatment of drug addicts.
