A premature newborn is one who is born with less than 37 completed weeks of intrauterine development, and due to their immaturity, they will not have fully developed, which may lead to a delay in their Neuropsychomotor Development (NPMD). Therefore, many of these babies will need to be admitted to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) so that they have adequate support soon after birth. This environment is completely controlled by noise, temperature and lighting, being subject to the intense action of gravity, which increases the chance of negative impacts on its development. The aim of this study is to present the importance of Sensory-Motor Stimulation (SME) in the NICU environment. This is an integrative literature review, carried out between the months of January and April 2023, using the SCIELO databases, repositories of national colleges, PEDro and PubMed, between the years 2012 to 2023. It was verified that the Sensory-Motor Stimulation (ESM) performed by the physiotherapist to the NB is extremely important, so that he can develop properly and not have delays in his NPMD. It is concluded that the ESM is a completely effective tool for the DNPM, because through the stimuli offered, the newborn will have the favorable conditions to develop in the most appropriate way possible.
