Introduction: Obesity is a non-communicable disease that is a growing global concern and increases the risk for chronic diseases, necessitating calorie interventions for weight loss. Intermittent fasting (IF) is a strategy used for the control of excess body weight, and its utilization has been increasing in recent years, as well as research on its effects on health. Objective: The present review aimed to evaluate weight loss through IF and analyze its efficacy in metabolically healthy overweight and/or obese adults. Method: The literature review was conducted between March and June 2023, and the guiding question was: "What is the effect of intermittent fasting on weight loss?" The studies were searched using the databases of the National Library of Medicine (PubMed) and the Virtual Health Library (VHL) with the keywords "Intermittent fasting," "Weight reduction“ and ”Obesity" from 2017 to 2023. The inclusion criteria were: studies with human subjects, adults, overweight and/or obese, and metabolically healthy. Result: After reading the studies and considering the exclusion criteria, 22 articles were included in this review. The criteria determined that periodic IF demonstrates weight loss and metabolic improvement, alternate-day fasting (ADF) provides the highest rate of improvement in metabolic rate, and timerestricted feeding (TRF) demonstrated greater effectiveness for weight loss. Conclusion: The analyzed studies demonstrated that IF is effective in promoting weight loss in overweight and obese adults. IF was able to alter metabolic parameters. IF did not show greater weight loss, adherence, and metabolic improvement compared to other calorie restriction interventions.
