Dental hypomineralization is characterized by a defect in enamel development, affecting both deciduous and permanent teeth. This complication causes problems such as dental hypersensitivity, usually related to dentin exposure due to the absence of protective enamel. It is of interest to dentists who treat patients with defects in enamel development, as well as incisor molar hypomineralization (MIH) or deciduous molar hypomineralization (HSPM), to acquire knowledge about desensitization protocols in cases diagnosed with any of these conditions. The objective of this study was to carry out a literature review on the different therapeutic options for reducing dental hypersensitivity in cases of MIH and MDH. Searches were carried out in the PubMed, SciELO and Google Scholar databases on the subject, using specific keywords to the subject. Articles on MIH and HSPM with their respective desensitization protocols were manually selected. Despite the limitations and challenges of treatment for hypomineralization, there are ways to help with hypersensitivity. Although few studies indicate a definitive treatment, the present work shows different treatment alternatives such as the use of fluoride varnish, dental sealants and adhesive restorations.
