Social media has a significant impact on the mental health of its users, presenting both positive and negative effects. While they provide opportunities for social connections and personal expression, they are also associated with growing concerns such as cyberbullying, exposure to harmful content, and social comparison, leading to feelings of sadness and dissatisfaction. The present research focused on this impact and was conducted through a literature review using the CAPES and BVS databases. Analyzing 24 articles published between 2018 to 2023. Initially, the search was performed with broader keywords, but it was refined to "social media" and "mental health" to obtain more precise results. The research addressed the effects and consequences of social media on mental health, as well as the pathologies triggered by their excessive use. Highlighting the redefinition of digital platforms during the COVID-19 pandemic, dependency, and the potential for addiction. It also discussed the risks associated with prolonged screen exposure, including the development of psychological disorders such as anxiety, eating disorders, and depression.
