dc.description.abstract | Introduction: Respiratory weakness and muscular fatigue can affect a healthy individual in countless ways, and may compromise their performance in a execution of an excercise. Respiratory Muscle Training (RMT) is a treatment that brings the solution to that problem, conditioning respiratory muscles to perform better their function. Objective: Evaluate the effects on maximal inspiratory pressures (MIP), maximal expiratory pressures (MEP), and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) by RMT on healthy individuals. Method: An experimental study was perfomed in college students with respiratory muscle weakness. In the experimental group (EG) 12 interventions for TMR with 50% of MIP were performed with the Powebreathe Plus® device and in the control group (CG) the use of incentive spirometer. MIP, MEP and VO2max were measured before and after intervention. Results: There was a significant increase (p = 0.028) in the MIP of the CG [PRE = 64.0 (44.0-93.0) cmH2O and POST = 87.0 (60.0-107.0) cmH2O]. There was also a significant increase (p = 0.018) in the MIP [PRE = 41.0 (22.0-71.0)cmH2O and POST = 73.0 (61.0-102.0)cmH2O]; and in the MEP (p = 0.018) [PRE = 49.0 (25.0-87.0)cmH2O and POS = 71.0 (58.0-102.0)cmH2O]. The VO2max showed no significant improvement in either group. Conclusion: RMT was effective in increasing respiratory muscle strength, however it was not significant to improve physical condition in young adults. | en |
| pt_BR |
