dc.description.abstract	The aesthetic smile is determined not only by your color, but also by the lips and the gums, that should be as harmonious as the dental criteria itself. When the individual has an exaggerated gingival exposure, is called gingival smile, and this situation can influence the self-esteem and the social relationship for that person. Many therapeutic options were proposals for the treatment of gingival smile, such as gingivectomy or gingivolplasty, myectomy, orthognathic surgery and more recently the use of botulinum toxin.in cases where the etiologic factor of gingival smile comes up with a hyperactivity of upper lip, the botulinum toxin appears as a simple and less evasive alternative when compared with the surgical procedures, which ones cause a larger morbidity to the patients. This study aims to describe, through a review of great literatures, as evidence that justify the use of the botulinum toxin for the treatment of gingival smile. The methodology adopted was the biographic research of scientific articles, restricted in the portuguese and english language and used the platforms and databases online, such as PubMed, SciELO, MEDline, Bireme and Google Scholar.	en
dc.description.abstract	sorriso estético é determinado não somente pela cor e forma dos dentes, mas também, pelos lábios e gengiva, que devem ser tão harmoniosos quanto os critérios dentários isoladamente. Quando o sorriso de um indivíduo apresenta exposição gengival exagerada, é denominado sorriso gengival, e tal situação pode influenciar a autoestima e o relacionamento social de uma pessoa. Várias opções terapêuticas foram propostas para o tratamento do sorriso gengival, tais como gengivectomia ou gengivoplastia, miectomia, cirurgia ortognática e, mais recentemente, o uso da toxina botulínica. Este trabalho teve como objetivo descrever, através de uma revisão de literatura, as evidências que justifiquem o uso da toxina botulínica para o tratamento do sorriso gengival. A metodologia adotada foi a de pesquisas bibliográficas de artigos científicos. A pesquisa restringiu-se às línguas portuguesa e inglesa, sendo utilizadas as bases de dados PubMed, SciELO, MEDLINE, Bireme e Google acadêmico. Pode-se concluir que, nos casos onde o fator etiológico do sorriso gengival for a hiperatividade do lábio superior, a toxina botulínica do tipo A surge como uma alternativa mais simples e menos invasiva, quando comparada aos procedimentos cirúrgicos, que causam maior morbidade aos pacientes.	pt_BR
