This paper discusses how PET packaging can have a vast environmental and economic impact, given its wide use in non-durable consumer goods in general. It is therefore of great importance to emphasize the recycling of this material, since with the increase of the population and the use of materials similar to PET, the impacts of solid waste are increasing. The objective is to achieve an alternative method for the reuse of polyethylene terephthalate primary packaging, which avoids contamination in its final disposal. With this purpose, this work develops a complete research concerning the development and synthesis of PET, environmental and economic impacts, and its recycling. As methodology adopted, first the preparation of PET is performed, after the chemical recycling by depolymerization, and also the purity of the terephthalic acid obtained is verified, which represents the primary substance aimed at. Through the results obtained and exposed here, it is concluded that the chemical recycling of terephthalic polyethylene packaging by the methodology used can be an efficient way to produce terephthalic acid, it is also concluded the importance of the research of efficient and increasingly clean methods for the disposal of solid waste.
