The human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 is one of the subtypes of HTLV, which acts directly affecting the T cells, correlating it as an etiological agent of several pathologies. This pathology is a worldwide public health problem, especially in underdeveloped and emerging countries. This article aims to review and disseminate important information about the virus, highlighting its general and specific characteristics, such as its direct link to serious diseases. This integrative review was developed by searching for articles in online databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Scielo, and Official Government Websites. 64 articles were found, 34 of these were included, and their data were collected. Therefore, it is suggested that the best way to prevent the spread of the virus would be through public health actions, such as intervention in the dissemination routes, inclusion on the National List of Compulsory Notification of Diseases and Conditions, and use of a risk marker such as proviral load.
