Chagas disease is an infection that is poorly informed to the population, neglected and easily transmitted in low-income populations living in precarious conditions of housing, sanitation and with low access to disease control and prevention. This paper presents general aspects of the T. cruzi parasite, its vector and characteristics of the disease in man, with description of laboratory tests, treatment and prevention in order to show and highlight the scope of the disease in different parts of Brazil, showing some prevalence studies. The increase in population in the urban areawith consequent deforestation and unplanned housing lead to changes in the ecosystem, causing, for example, the entry of vectors such as the barber in peridomiciliary and intradomiciliary places. In more recent studies, the increase in oral transmission mode is reported, which has impacted surveillance in food hygiene to eliminate new cases. In addition, actions that seek greater knowledge of the general population and greater control of public health are necessary, given the importance of the disease.
