Objetivo: Apresentar o papel fundamental do farmacêutico no tratamento
enfatizam a importância do acompanhamento farmacêutico no tratamento do Diabetes Mellitus
Introduction:Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disorder primarily characterized by insulin resistance. The first-line treatment involves oral antidiabetic drugs, and insulin use becomes necessary when endogenous secretion is lost to maintain normal blood glucose levels. Insulin therapy in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus presents several challenges related to adherence, management, transportation, and storage, among others; therefore, strategies to facilitate and improve medication therapy must be applied to the patient. Objective: To present the crucial role of the pharmacist in the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and raise awareness among pharmaceutical professionals to seek effective strategies that impact patient treatment and, consequently, their quality of life. Methods: This study is an integrative review, involving the search for scientific articles in databases (PubMed, Medline, Google Scholar, BVS, SciELO, Guidelines from the Brazilian Diabetes Society, American Diabetes Association, and International Diabetes Federation). Relevant articles from the last 10 years (2013-2023) were included, while articles without concrete results were excluded. Results: Sixteen articles were analyzed, emphasizing the importance of pharmaceutical monitoring in the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, particularly in cases requiring insulin therapy. Conclusion: The pharmacist, as part of the multidisciplinary team, has proven effective in improving parameters related to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and enhancing the patient's quality of life through interventions that aim to instruct, educate, and empower the patient, primarily based on the principles of Pharmaceutical Care.
