Artigo Científico Acesso fechado Instrumento de avaliação Latch no prognóstico da duração do aleitamento materno(2019) Dias, Larissa da CunhaIntroduction: Breastfeeding Evaluation instruments enables a systematic analysis and facilitates charting of the observations. The LATCH score stands out among them by being simpler to apply and based on well-known formats. Objectives: To investigate the association between the LATCH score, totally and by domains, and breastfeeding duration during the first six months after birth. Methods: Prospective cohort study performed in a Grande Florianópolis hospital, in Santa Catarina. The assessment of breastfeeding with LATCH score was performed in 125 dyads in the first 24 hours of life, followed by telephone follow-up every 30 days until the sixth month. In the data analysis the variables were described through the mean and standard deviation, and presented as relative and absolute frequencies. Differences between groups were analyzed by Student’s t-test for continuous variables and Fisher’s exact and chi-square test for categorical variables. Results: The LATCH scores tended to be higher in the group that remained breastfeeding compared to the group in which breastfeeding was discontinued, except in the 150 days period. However, the differences were not significant. Analyzing domains separately, a higher mean in latch-on was observed in those who were still breastfeeding at 30º day (p=0,04). Conclusions: The LATCH tool indicates mother and baby dyads that need more assistance from caregivers, also helps to identify those who are at risk for early weaning.
