Resumo
The coastal lagoons re highly productive coastal environments, with key functions in the life cycle of many marine organisms, acting as nursery grounds, feeding area and habitat for a wide variety of fish and other animal species. In addition to the local natural and man-made processes that modulate the estuarine benthic associations, large-scale meteorological processes, such as ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscilations), can also influence the dynamics of these ecosystems. The present study aimed to comparatively assess the interannual variability (2013 to 2019) of the benthic macrofauna of Spartina alterniflora marshes and adjacent unvegetated areas in the Laguna Estuarine System (SC). Samplings were performed in the Santo Antônio Lagoon in 3 different sites, separated by a 100 m minimum distance. Each site is encompass 2 habitats - one vegetated (salt marshes) and one unvegetated. Each year, sampling occurred twice in winter and twice in summer. The results of this study showed a clear distinction of the benthic macrofauna between salt marshes and unvegetated areas. This distinction reflected especially a higher faunal density in unvegetated areas, though there were small differences in species composition between these two habitats. However contrary to what was expected, the descriptors of fauna (richness, density and diversity) were not higher in the salt marshes, but were generally higher in the unvegetated areas. As for the macrofauna temporal variability, both seasonal and interannual, our results showed that, independent of environmental complexity, the benthic macrofauna exhibited synchronized seasonal variability. The interannual variability between habitats differed during El Niño periods, when the salt marshes macrofauna remained relatively stable unlike unvegetated areas that show significant increases in density, particularly of opportunistic species such as Monokallipseudes schubarti.
