Resumo
Essa monografia tem como objetivo analisar a relação entre o Estado, a política e a religião no sistema internacional ocidental. Nesse aspecto, a análise tem seu início em uma breve menção ao fim do Império Romano e início da Era Medieval, demonstrando a ascensão do cristianismo e sua primeira grande mudança em relação ao poder político na Europa. A investigação aprofunda-se principalmente na modernidade, nos eventos da Reforma Protestante, Guerra dos Trinta Anos, Paz de Westfália e Revolução Francesa, e como a instituição da Igreja Católica exerceu seu poder político internacional nesse período. Por fim, verifica-se o impacto desses eventos na teoria das relações internacionais e o reflexo da religião na sua formação como disciplina, conceituando uma nova religião baseada nos ideais iluministas e humanistas, a “religião civil”. Nesse sentido, o trabalho demonstra a compreensão da religião nas relações internacionais como objeto de análise e identifica seu papel e influência no recorte ocidental da história. Mais especificamente, isso é feito analisando os impactos da religião no pensamento político internacional, investigando a profunda influência da religião nas relações internacionais entre 1517 (Reforma Protestante) e 1789 (Revolução Francesa), e identificando e conceituando o período de pós-secularização no estudo de relações internacionais.
This monograph aims to analyze the relationship between the State, politics and religion in the western international system. In this aspect, the analysis begins with a brief mention of the end of the Roman Empire and the beginning of the Medieval Era, demonstrating the rise of Christianity and its first major change in relation to political power in Europe. The investigation delves mainly into modernity, the events of the Protestant Reformation, the Thirty Years' War, the Peace of Westphalia and the French Revolution, and how the institution of the Catholic Church exercised its international political power in this period. Finally, the impact of these events on the theory of international relations and the reflection of religion in its formation as a discipline is verified, conceptualizing a new religion based on Enlightenment and humanist ideals, the "civil religion". In this sense, the work demonstrates the understanding of religion in international relations as an object of analysis and identifies its role and influence in the western frame of history. More specifically, this is done by analyzing the impacts of religion on international political thought, investigating the profound influence of religion on international relations between 1517 (Protestant Reformation) and 1789 (French Revolution), and identifying and conceptualizing the post-secularization period in the study of international relations.
