Marked by diffuse emotional and behavioral symptoms, postpartum depression (PPD) is a disease that affects a considerable percentage of women in the post-gestational period. Some theories try to explain its pathophysiology, but the origin is still not very well understood. Several factors, such as socioeconomic and sociocultural, are marked for the development of PPD and the symptoms do not differ significantly from other depressive conditions. Regarding pharmacological treatment, antidepressant drugs of different classes can be used, however, the risk-benefit for both the mother and the infant should be considered for the definition of the treatment, and this theme is the objective of this article, which was elaborated based on the research of the scientific literature of several databases. The data presented mainly suggest pharmacotherapy as an ideal treatment, but they come up against the safety and cause of the disease. Prevention and correct diagnosis are also linked to this fact, however, they reflect the lack of epidemiological data on the subject. According to the studies, the drugs sertraline and fluoxetine are safer for the infant.
