Introduction: Alzheimer's disease is the main cause of dementia in the elderly, affecting about 30% of the population aged 85 years or older. Considered a chronic, degenerative and gradual disease of the brain that has no cure. The disease is characterized by an atrophic brain, due to the loss of brain cells and the accumulation of β-amyloid and hyperphosphorylation of the Tau protein. Symptoms appear about 20 years after the first changes in brain structure, and include memory loss and behavior change. Its emergence is related to several factors, among them, an inadequate diet, low education and sedentary lifestyle. A healthy diet rich in antioxidants, B vitamins and omega 3 can help promote disease prevention benefits. Objective: To relate the Mediterranean diet as a protective factor in Alzheimer's disease. Methods: Literature review, through the PubMed, Scielo and Google Scholar database, selecting articles from the last five years, the descriptors used were described from DeCS/MeSH and were linked to the Boolean operator “AND”. Results: 24 articles were retrieved, which after reading, 10 were used. It was shown in this review that the Mediterranean Diet can help in the prevention of Alzheimer's disease. Conclusion: It was possible to identify relevant factors of the Mediterranean Diet in the prevention of Alzheimer's, but further studies are needed to substantiate the importance of food as a protective factor in Alzheimer's Disease.
