Sickle cell anemia is an autosomal hereditary disease, common worldwide among the black population with a high incidence in Brazil. Current treatments for sickle cell anemia include the drug Hydroxyurea; Blood transfusion for patients who had complications; Vaccination; Use of penicillin (first five years of life); Pain medications and bone marrow transplant. Transplantation is a curative treatment for the disease, but there is great difficulty in finding a compatible donor, which restricts its use. But, with advances in biotechnology, the cure may be coming through a different technology than bone marrow transplantation, which is Autologous Transplantation.
