Artigo Científico Acesso embargado Funcionalidade em Idosos com Artrose no joelho(2018) Alano, William MartinsOsteoarthritis or osteoarthrosis (OA) can be defined as a chronic disease in which the individual has joint pain, tenderness, and movement limitation (BARTELS et al, 2016). Arthrosis is currently recognized as a disease that affects all tissues of the joint (NEOGI, 2012). Older people in about seventy years in 85% of the lower classes present some degree of OA. (TAYLOR, 2015). The objective of this study was to evaluate the functionality in elderly with OA, practitioners of physical exercise and non-practitioners. This was a cross-sectional descriptive study using a quantitative approach, the WOMAC three-dimensional quality of life questionnaire was applied in two groups of elderly individuals over 60 years old, one active (n = 8) and one non-active (n = 9) all with diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis. The obtained data were tabulated in Microsoft Excell and later a comparative inferential statistical analysis made through the non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test for independent samples. The significant values found are those less than or equal to 0.05. The only item evaluated with significance value was "pain intensity", however, all other aspects indicated improvement of the active group in its functionality. The results of the study suggest that physical exercise significantly reduces the pain of individuals with osteoarthritis, and although there is no statistical evidence, the other factors evaluated demonstrate benefits in the functional capacity of the active elderly when compared to the sedentary ones.
