Dissertação Acesso aberto Processos de conversão de registros em língua natural para linguagem de matemática: análise com base na teoria da relevância(2013) Andrade filho, Bazilicio Manoel deThis study analyzes the conversion from Natural to Mathematical Language in Mathematical problems solving, arguing that relevancy relations underlie these processes. In order to achieve such a goal, Duval’s (2009) Registers of Semiotic Representations, and Sperber and Wilson’s (1986, 1995) Relevance Theory are presented; and the descriptive and explanatory potential of relevance-theoretic approach is illustrated in solving a problem about the area of the trapezium and the volume of the prism of a gold bar. Findings indicate that the problem’s proposition in natural language and the horizontal geometrical representation of the bar lead the students to correctly understand the lexical sequence “bar’s height” as the height of a trapezium, and incorrectly understand it as the height of a prism. This result suggests that students are generalizing the HEIGHT concept as something that is vertical rather than something that is a line segment that is perpendicular to the bases and restrained by them (height of a trapezium), or a distance that forms a right angle between the two bases of a prism (height of a prism).
