Artigo Científico Acesso embargado Análise dos acidentes apílicos em Santa Catarina, 2007-2017(2018) Oliveira, Suzana Kniphoff deBackground: Incidents involving poisonous animals, particularly bee stings, constitute a public health problem in Brazil. There were 138,743 incidents caused by multiple stings from bees, which resulted in 414 deaths throughout the country between 2000 and 2017. Methods: This was an observational study with a cross-sectional design, including all reported bee sting cases among residents in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, between 2007 and 2017. Results: There were 8,912 bee sting cases reported during the study period, which represented an overall rate of 12,3 incidents per 100,000 population. The mean age was 29,8±19,4 years, ranging from 0 to 96 years of age. Of the total sample, 60,2% were men. The cases were distributed across all seasons, with a higher prevalence during the summer (45.6%). The highest frequency of these accidents (53.1%) occurred in urban areas, and 19.2% of the incidents affected people during their work hours. The head was the site most affected by the stings (39.6%), followed by the upper limbs. Pain and local edema were the most frequent clinical manifestations, and vagal alterations were the most common systemic manifestations. The lethality rate was 0.16%, affecting predominantly older people. Conclusions: The state of Santa Catarina, Brazil has a high incidence rate of bee stings, which is higher than the national average. Most cases occur in the western and far western parts of the state. These data may be underestimated, given that many incidents of bee stings are not reported, either because there is no demand for health services, or because they are not notified by the health professionals.
