Artigo Científico Acesso aberto Voluntários da pátria na guerra do Paraguai: a epopeia do 17° Corpo de Minas Gerais(2017) Sabioni, Antônio Claret SoaresDuring the Paraguayan War, the 17th Fatherland Volunteer Corps, of the Province of Minas Gerais, integrated the Expeditionary Force that operated in the south of Mato Grosso, then invaded by the Paraguayans, and was one of the protagonists of the epic episode narrated by Alfredo d'Escragnolle Taunay in his famous literary work "A Retirada da Laguna" (The Retreat from Laguna). In this year, that marks the 150th anniversary of the war operation called the "Retirada da Laguna", one of the most glorious pages of the Brazilian Military History, it is opportune to revisit the history of the 17th Fatherland Volunteer Corps. The present study has this purpose and deals with the various human and military aspects of this Volunteer Corps, from recruiting, through its formation and trajectory in the campaign, to its final destination in the post-war period. The study shows that the 17th Fatherland Volunteer Corps was mobilized throughout the war, participated in the Mato Grosso Campaign, and later became part of the forces commanded by Count d'Eu in Paraguay, but above all, it entered the Military History by the examples of discipline, bravery, obstinacy, resignation and overcoming in exceptional situations, during the "Retirada da Laguna".
