Artigo Científico Acesso aberto Avaliação radiológica dos Spheniscus magellanicus (pinguis-de-Magalhães) atendidos no Hospital Veterinário Unisul.(2020) da Rosa, Helena Maciel BrandlSpheniscus magellanicus represents the most common penguin species to occur in the Brazilian coast. Inhabiting Patagonia and the Falkland Islands the species use to come annually to the Southern Brazilian coast, leaving their breeding colonies in the search for food which is more abundant in the winter and autumn periods. Due to the movement of sea currents and the long journey, penguins can become sick and present injuries that prevent them from following their route. When found at the beaches they are collected and sent to receive veterinary support. Radiography is an increasingly used tool in the diagnosis of these penguins. However, in order to be well executed, radiographic examination requires taking into consideration some factors such as the patients’ physical characteristics. Radiographic data of 7 penguins treated at Hospital Veterinário Unisul, from 2017 to 2018, such as positioning, radiographic technics (kV/mAs), region under evaluation, radiographic findings and most affected tissues were considered. Amid the findings, respiratory and musculoskeletal tissues were the most affected, the latter more frequently. This allows us to conclude that factors such as anthropic interaction and decrease in immune response, associated with opportunistic disease, are factors that are more likely to influence the stranding of Magelllanic penguins during their journey.Journakl
