Monografia Acesso aberto Alterações periodontais em pacientes submetidos ao uso de aparelho ortodôntico fixo e alinhador removível: uma revisão de literatura(2020) Weber, Cinara Della GiustinaThe periodontium is the set of tissues interconnected by the gums, alveolar bone, cementum and periodontal ligament, forming a complex of biological and functional development. It is subject to morphological and functional changes due to the interaction with the environment. Considering that the oral cavity is exposed to the colonization of several microorganisms, the components of orthodontic devices can lead to the accumulation of dental biofilm, which can cause adverse changes in periodontal tissues. Thus, the present study aims to conduct a literature review on a periodontal condition of patients using the fixed orthodontic appliance and removable aligner, through books and scientific articles, related to the subject in question, found in the following databases: MEDLINE, PubMed and SciELO. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that treatment with removable aligners is associated with lower levels of biofilm, gingival inflammation and probing depth, as they seem to facilitate oral hygiene procedures and the maintenance of periodontal health. The fixed orthodontic appliances, in turn, were related to a greater accumulation of biofilm and to a more pathogenic microbiota. It is evident, then, the importance of correct oral hygiene during both cases to prevent damage and maintain the periodontium, ensuring the success of orthodontic treatment and the patient's health.
