The aim of this study was to identify the gain of muscle mass in bodybuilders adept at vegetarian diet. This is a literature review article, which used electronic databases: Google Scholar, Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo) and National Library of Medicine (MEDLINE/PubMed) with publications from the last six years. The results showed that adequate protein intake and mechanical stimulation on skeletal muscle exert a positive effect on muscle hypertrophy, even for vegetarians who consume eggs and dairy products or not. Studies show a reduction in the percentage of fat (2.23%), observing an increase in muscle mass (2.23%), a decrease in fat mass (1.23%), an increase in muscle mass (1.23%) and improvement relative in strength gain in all exercises evaluated. Based on the results described, more scientific evidence is needed to make concrete statements about this issue.
