3 passos, adesivos auto-condicionantes e adesivos universais.
Introduction: Adhesive systems have been increasingly important for the dental surgeon during clinical practice, providing the professional with changes, mainly in terms of the longevity of restorations. In addition to promoting adhesion between tooth and restoration, these materials have some other relevant advantages, such as: reduced risk of recurrent caries, decreased operative sensitivity, among others. Currently, there are several types of dental adhesives available on the market, namely: conventional 2-step and 3-step adhesives, selfetching adhesives and universal adhesives. Objective: To carry out a literature review comparing the effectiveness of universal adhesives against conventional 2- or 3-step adhesives and self-etching adhesives. Methods: This is a literature review. The electronic search was carried out in the databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, SciElo and Lilacs, in Portuguese, English and Spanish, with no date restriction and includes studies of the type: experimental, case reports and systematic and integrative literature review. The collection was carried out in March 2023. Results: Universal adhesives proved to be effective in all types of bonding strategies when compared to self-etching and conventional adhesives, and can be used on both dental and non-dental substrates. In addition, they ionically bond to hydroxyapatite in dental tissues, providing both a mechanical and a chemical bond, making this a very stable adhesion. Conclusion: Although the conventional adhesive is still considered the gold standard in dentistry, universal adhesives are gaining market share due to their versatility and ease of use, proving to be effective in all types of adhesive strategies.
