Anxiety disorders are a group of psychiatric conditions that affect millions of people worldwide, representing a significant public health problem. With the growth of anxiety disorders in the population, it is necessary to find treatment methods that are accessible to the population. Physical exercises have long been studied in the health field and have shown to be significant contributors to health promotion. This study reviews the literature on the role of physical exercise in the prevention and treatment of anxiety disorders. The review was conducted in databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, Scielo, and CAPES. Articles published in the last 10 years were included. Of the 179,090 articles initially identified, 18 met the inclusion criteria and were selected for final analysis. The results suggest that regular physical exercise is associated with a reduction in anxiety symptoms, functioning as an effective intervention for both the treatment and prevention of anxiety disorders. However, the effectiveness of physical exercise may vary depending on the studied population and the type of exercise practiced. We conclude that physical exercise plays an important role as an auxiliary treatment in reducing the symptoms of anxiety disorders, but more research is needed to establish specific exercise protocols for different populations.
