Artigo Científico Acesso embargado Compreensão dos diabéticos sobre os açúcares de adição notificados em rótulos de alimentos(2018) Walter, Eliziane GoulartIntroduction: Changes in dietary patterns and substitutions for industrialized, ultraprocessed products favor the appearance of Chronic Noncommunicable Diseases such as Diabetes Mellitus. The ingestion of sugars contributes to aggravate the disease. In Brazil, added sugars (AS) are reported on packaged food labels through the ingredient list and present a variety of synonyms. Objective: To verify the understanding of diabetics on added sugars reported in food labels. Methods: Descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study and quantitative research. Data collection was performed through interviews with 125 diabetics. Results: Most of them were not in the habit of reading labels (58,4%), presented difficulties related to the size of the letter (92,8%) and the technical names used (72%), didn’t read list of ingredients (69,9%) and didn’t know the order of presentation (88%). Most are also unaware of the presence of sugars in salty products, and do not understand the many nomenclatures of AS such as maltodextrin (93,6%), dextrose (91,2%), malt extract (88,8%). Only 1,6% correctly rated five AS types in a list of ingredients. Conclusions: Diabetics do not understand about AS reported on food labels. Educational measures and public politics are necessary to value the importance of nutrition labeling.
